What is PACeS?
Prairie Adventist Christian eSchool (PACeS) is one of several online schools in the province of Alberta. These schools can be public schools or independent schools under the direction of the Alberta Ministry of Education. All students must meet the Alberta learning outcomes for their prescribed grade. PACeS is licensed and accredited by the provincial government. PACeS offers programs and courses that have been developed by the North American Division of the SDA church and are augmented by direct teacher input in support of the K-12 Alberta curriculum.

How much does it cost?
Alberta Residents
There are no tuition fees for students enrolled in our K-12 online (teacher-directed) program, however, there are registration fees detailed in the Financial Policies section of the handbook.
The Alberta Government provides some funding (receipts are required) for families that are under the Home Education Regulation (parent-directed program) and registered with PACeS prior to September 30th.

What equipment do I need?
In order for you to be a part of the online learning adventure it is necessary to have a personal computer (less than 5 year old Windows or Mac PC) with a high speed Internet connection, to which you can download and install software. Chromebooks, tablets and smartphones do not have all the capabilities necessary for the online program. You will also need a headset with microphone, webcam, and printer/scanner. These components will enable you to enjoy many learning opportunities and to communicate with your teacher and classmates. As we use Google Apps for Education, you will find your school activities generally run more smoothly if you use Google Chrome as your web browser.

When can I join PACeS?
Applications are accepted at any time, however, students may only join classes at the beginning of the Semester (9-12) or Term (K-8, Terms 1-3).

Can I transfer back to regular school from PACeS?
You may transfer back to regular school at any time. At year-end, the transition is automatic upon completion of a grade or courses. During the year, students may transfer in or out of PACeS. The curriculum match for students leaving PACeS and entering regular schools will be the receiving school’s responsibility.

Can I do Distance Education by myself?
Parents or guardians are expected to assist students by monitoring time and work completed. The family may hire a tutor if and when needed. The assigned teacher at PACeS will be available to provide assistance.

What is the difference between Alberta Home Education and PACeS Online program?
Alberta Home Education Program
Families who would like to be in charge of their child’s education using the traditional approach to homeschooling under section 2(3) of the Home Education Regulation can be registered with PACeS. Parents are responsible to create an educational plan and show samples of completed work. A PACeS Home Education Facilitator will visit twice a year.
PACeS Online Program
Families who would like to do school at home and be under the supervision of a teacher, thus meeting the prescribed learning outcomes in the required courses, can be enrolled with the PACeS online program. The student will receive regular report cards each year.

How will PACeS implement the ministry guidelines?
Alberta Home Education Program
Parents will have to prepare a student-learning plan in consultation with PACeS Administration. A list of all the resources used must be provided. PACeS can assist in the preparation of the learning plan, and will review the proposed plan to ensure that it meets the learning outcomes.
PACeS Online Program
Students will follow ministry guidelines as outlined by their Alberta-certified teachers and upon completion of grade 12 will receive an Alberta High School Diploma.
